څـوک چـې ژبې ته کـوز ګوري هغه څۀ وي ؟

دَ حُباب پشــان بې کچـــه ، بې بقــا وي

دا ګل ورين او لونګين وطن

دا ګل ورين او لونګين وطن،

دا ښکلې،ښکلې نازنين وطن،

ددې په خاورو کښې مستي او سرور،

قند او نبات هسې شيرين وطن،

هره دره کښې ئي ښائيست او خمار،

دا په ښائيست ښکلې رنګين وطن،

Murdering a baby

On a cold afternoon, reading the news item about female foetuses found in a garbage drum, I cringed with horror and pain.

It’s too late though; no one can do anything about these innocent victims now. These girls could have grown up to be beautiful womenwho could have shouldered the pain and responsibilities of their parents. If only they were given a chance.

And then they were free

There was blood everywhere.

The ringing in the ears. The throbbing pain in his gut from being punched. The mini blackouts that wouldn’t stop. The screams he would hear intermittently. The mad blinding rage he felt turning cold.

يو دوه نا، پوره شل زامن لونړه ئې وو ـ پخپله حساب اوجنگوئ چې د ټولو کشر د يو کال وه او په لاره کې بريک نه وي راغلې نو د ټولو مشر به د سو کالو وه ؟ په کور کې ئې يوه نوکره هم وه ـ وائي چې مشر هلک ئې پيدا شوې وه نو د هغه وخت نه ورکره ده ـ يونوکر هم ورکره وه چې د ورزې به باغبان وه او د شپې به ئې سوکيداري کوله ـ دوئې خزه خاوند لا سيوا وو کنې دغه کور کې دوئې له زائې نه وه ـ ما ور له خه سلاح ورکړې وه چې ټول نارينه په جومات کې سملئ ـ هسې په زوره زوري په کور کې زکه ميشته وو چې د کور ټوله خرچه د دوئي په سر وه ـ

Ameer Hamza Shinwari (Pashto: حمزه شينواری), born in Landi Kotal in the year 1907 and died in February 1994, was a famous Pashtun poet. He Belonged to the Shinwari tribe of the ethnic Pashtuns. Ameer Hamza’s work is considered a fusion between classic and modern poetry. He followed the traditional old classical poetry and blended it with the modern spirit, as well as introducing new ideas in Pashto Ghazals and took this genre of poetry to perfection. He is known as the father of Pashto Ghazals.

I am a Pashtun, miserable Pashtun!

Stands alone with miserable present
troublesome past and dim future!
And I have my family tree that goes for thousands years and tell you thousands stories!
And I have a land to live, but not for me to live
And I have eyes that see and cry
And I have a family that I love
like you love yours….
