A Book Reading Competition was arranged at the Central Library of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar on 10th November, 2014. The students of different departments participated in the activity and discussed the novel of American literature, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

U.S Consulate, Peshawar, provided texts of the novel to all the participants. It was a joint venture of the University and U.S Consulate in order to promote reading habits among students as books provide both the opportunity to reflect on our lives, and to think about the larger world. Moreover, this activity provided an opportunity to Pakistani students to read the masterpieces of American Literature.

To Kill a Mockingbird took the readers to the roots of human behavior – to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos. All the participants enthusiastically took part in the activity and discussed the significance of title, characters and themes. Ms. Henna Karamat, Coordinator Advance Studies & Certificate Courses, from Department of English Language & Literature was the organizer of the event. The students found the story compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving.
