Mr. Gowher Ali, PhD scholar department of pharmacy completed his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Fazal Subhan. He studied the newly synthesized derivatives of silicon (salicyl alcohol) for their effects on Cyclooxygenase enzyme system. Cyclooxygenases are known for their role in synthesis of prostaglandins which have gastro protective activity. The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (SAIDs), on the other hand, inhibit cyclooxygenases, leading to gastric ulceration and perforation when used chronically. Mr.Gowher (Now Doctor), proved that his test compounds have, though, antipyretic, anti-nociceptive and analgesic properties, but are devoid of potential to cause gastric ulceration and perforation, based on their selective role to inhibit cyclooxegenases.
He conducted his study, in bioassay laboratory of the department of pharmacy, university of Peshawar. He successfully defended his PhD thesis yesterday, in the public defense held in the video conference hall, UoP.
