KMU will establish research institute for liver transplant

Diabetes and Hepatitis are two major threats to this region with sinister complications and can never be controlled by adhoc arrangements. A permanent structure – robust physically and intellectually is required to oversee the activities – preventive, evidence based therapeutic and research to control the diseases and prevent its spread.

In this connection Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved PC-1 worth Rs 980.352 million of the proposed projects of Khyber Medical University KMU) Peshawar to establish Research Institute of Hepatology, Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery & Transplantation (RIHEHP) and Research Institute of Diabetology, Endocrinology & NCDs (RIDENC).Sponsoring Agency of this project is Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad while execution, operation and maintenance will be carried out by KMU.

This project is approved in the 23rd meeting of CDWP held under the chairmanship of Mr. Ahsan Iqbal Federal Minister for Planning & Development / Dy. Chairman Planning Commission of Pakistan at Islamabad.

The approved PC-1 revealed that RIHEHP and RIDENC will offer state of the art services of liver transplant for patients developing liver cancer and will treat complications of diabetes like ketoacidosis, renal, cardiac, eye and foot ulcers and will offer advanced interventional radiology services for peripheral angioplasty. The institutes can further look into the possibility of pancreatic transplant as a cure for diabetes in the future.

Both institutes will offer wonderful opportunity to train doctors in prevention and treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases. This will offer a platform for basic science researchers to conduct research on etiology, prevention and dissemination of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Well-equipped pathology laboratories, Clinical and epidemiological, Basic Genetic and Stem Cell research, and radiology services will be installed and will be shared by two institutes. State of the art computer lab will also be established to meet the demand of all the students and faculty.

According to details RIDEDNC will have limited beds for treating complications of diabetes like ketoacidosis, renal, cardiac, eye and foot ulcers. This will offer advanced interventional radiology services for peripheral angioplasty while RIHEHPT will be developed to offer Liver transplant facilities and transplant services in the field of Pancreatic transplant and bone marrow transplant. This shall offer treating complications of Hepatitis like Cirrhosis, Chronic hepatitis, Esophageal varices etc.

Surgical facilities will include advanced laparoscopic Hepato pancreatic biliary surgical services. It is worth mentioning that the aforesaid facilities will be made available to public through minimum user charges and financial support of the Govt. of KP.
