UoP Convocation: 460 Students awarded degrees

Around 460 graduates were awarded degrees during the University of Peshawar Convocation for session 2012 on Thursday at University Public School Peshawar. The awardees included 17 PhD degree holders, 06 M. Phil while 33 students were those who were grabbed top position in their concern department and were awarded Gold Medals while 437 students were get their degrees.

There were 317 female students who get their degrees while 143 were male students who were awarded degrees and received from the Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Abbasi. The Gold Medalist included Sarfaraz Khan of MA Anthropology, Saima Saif of MA Arabic, Ataullah of MA Pashto, Zahirullah MA Urdu, Saira Shaoukat M. Sc Botany, Saadia Swaleh M. Sc Geography, Nasseha Bibi, M. Sc Zoology, Bushra Waheed Pharm D, Syed Muhammad Aqib MA, Journalism, Sundas Anwar MBA, Muhammad Kashif Jamil, M. Com, Atif Iqbal MPA, Mewaish Naz MLIS, Izaz M. Sc Computer Science, Sumaira Saleem Akhtar Mathematics, Neelam Gul Physics, Muhammad Mohsin Kamal Statistics, Umamma Sadaf Economics, Sonia Inam International Relations, Uzma Mukarram Political Science. Roya M. Sc Psychology, Nida Ajmal Social Work, Abdual Majid Khan, Sociology, Haseena Nasim M. Ed, Ubaidullah Khan MA Gender Studies.

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mr. Mehtab Ahmed Khan highlighted the importance of the role of education in the socio-economic development of societies is well acknowledged and realized fact. We too have attained progress to a certain level in our quest for achieving excellence both from infrastructure and academic development point of views, he added.

He further added that the weak financial situation always leads to compromises and steps are needed to be taken to correct the system and make the institution financially sound and self sustainable. “We all are encouraged to learn about the initiatives taken by the University’s administration; the goals achieved and the spirit with which the University team is serving this alma mater. I wish this institution should always be a real launching pad for learning, research initiatives and development”, the Governor said.

Pointing towards graduating students, the Governor said, it is the beginning of a new phase in their lives which indeed will be highly thrilling but rewarding too. Always try to be honest to your profession; loyal to your institution and ready to confront any challenge which you come across in the fulfillment of your responsibilities. “This in itself will be the best return to the sacrifices which your parents have rendered; a best service to the nation and above all best sacrifice to our beloved motherland”, the Governor said. .

Addressing the ceremony the Vice Chancellor congratulated the students and their proud parents on the one of the biggest achievement of their life. He added that we cannot get benefit from our geographical advantage unless our youth is skilled and highly qualified. He viewed that the homeland is blessed with enormous potential which needs tapping and the same can only be done through capacity building of the new generation.

Prof. Dr. Rasul Jan earlier, welcoming the Governor said that the university with 49 department; institutes and constituent institutions; 628 faculties including 249 Ph.D scholars have moved from intense research studies to imparting knowledge in true sense and now they are struggling to step in the stage of knowledge application studies. Similarly, he said, certain new departments including Peace and Conflict Studies have also been introduced. There ceremony was attended by vice chancellors of public sector universities from across the province and other prominent educationists and parents of the graduating students. Earlier, the Governor gave away degrees to the graduating students.
