UoP enrolls afghan nationals in distance education programme

The University of Peshawar (UoP) has enrolled afghan nationals in different educational discipline under its Distance Education Programme to provide them quality education facilities, a senior official said on Thursday.Professor Dr Inamanullah Khan, Director Distance Education Programme UoP told APP that afghan nationals were enrolled in different education programmes to enable them to get quality education in different disciplines. 

He said afghan students belonged to Jalalabad Afghanistan were also enrolled. He said about 1400 students including Afghan nationals and tribesmen belong to Fata have applied for admission in different education programmes including Master/Bachelor of Education, Master in Economics, Political Science and English for current academic year, adding their merit list were displayed in the University of Peshawar and official website of Distance Education Programme.

He said admission process will be completed by December 2 after which classes will start from December 15 next. To provide quality education to students irrespective of caste, colour and gender, he said 11 special learning centres have been setup in different districts of Khyber Pakthunkhwa including three learning centres in Peshawar. 

Two new learning centres in Kohat and Chitral were also established. The students of those districts where learning centres did not exist would be taught in Peshawar and facilities of hostels would be provided to them, he maintained.

Dr. Inamullah said centres are located at such places of the districts where students from all corners, areas could easily reach. He said the demand for education has increased drastically throughout the world and the formal system of education cannot cope with the demand of education for all due to increase in population and technological advancement. 

He said an effort to extend educational opportunities to all eligible students especially to adults and females, distance education appears to provide the best answer. 

He said the idea of Distance Education Programme was floated by High Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad in 2007 and six highly reputable universities including university of Peshawar was selected for this goal oriented programme. 

Dr Inam said a Tutorial System has been introduced for this programme to facilitate and educate the admitted students in their respective districts,” he said, adding tutors were selected strictly on merit keeping in view their academic record, experience and nature of students availability. He said UoP has brought a revolution in the field of education and has provided an opportunity to poor, females, on job and people of all walks of life to get education on their doorsteps.
