A weeklong teachers’ training workshop under UNESCO concluded here on Tuesday at Area Study Centre University of Peshawar. The objective of the workshop was to urge upon school teachers to promote local culture in school curriculum. Professor Sher Alam Shinwari told participants that including local cultural heritage was need of the hour because our children did not know about our own cultural values which encouraged militancy and extremism. He said Pashto folk poetry is rich and could be used for promoting indigenous cultural diversity. He called upon schools teachers to improvise different ways and means to integrate intangible and tangible cultural heritage into our education system for the sustainable social development and peace building. A total of 70 male and female teachers from public sector KP and Fata schools participated. He said Pashto tapa and charbeta cover almost every aspect of Pashtun life, similarly handcrafts, traditional games and social practices should be revived while folk poetry needed equal attention. He regretted that most of our local cultural values were being faded away which he said was a great national loss.
