3day workshop held at UET

A three-day workshop on “Sustainable Solution of Energy Crisis via Academia in Pakistan”; ” Bridging Government, Industry and Academia” closed the other day with recommendations from all three stakeholders. The workshop was held in joint collaboration of Center for Advanced Studies in Energy (CAS-E), University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar and University of Cambridge, UK, sponsored by the British Council Researchers Link Programme. The focal persons of workshop included Dr. Najeeb Ullah, Director CAS-E and Professor David Cardwell, Deputy Head of Engineering Department, University of Cambridge UK. 

The energy experts from Cambridge University and from leading Pakistani universities including LUMS and NUST deliberated on best practices of how academics are finding out solutions to energy problems, and working together with government in managing resource depletion and alternate solutions on non-conventional energy sources. 

Dr. Samar Mubarakmand, renowned expert on coal mining on Thar coal project said this workshop helped academics and industry representatives to understand the framework necessary to enable Pakistan to gain sustainability through secure use of renewable energy sources. He also expressed interest in exploring possibilities of starting new projects with CAS-E UET in implanting new progammes.

Dr. Gufaraz, Chairman Government’s Task Force of Exploitation of Shale Gas, said Pakistan has the potential of becoming 9th largest country in the world having shale gas resources, adding the Task Force will come up with the Shale gas policy soon for proper exploitation of this resource. He urged academics, investors and government should come at a common forum to bring out this potential and urged UET experts to collaborate with the Task Force in preparing the policy”, he said. The Vice Chancellor UET Peshawar, Syed Imtiaz Gilani also spoke on the occasion said, CAS-E should be placed at public policy level where consortium of international experts on energy should be gathered and present practical solutions.
